The Exhibition of KENGO KUMA in CHINA

with Designer Zhu’E as the curator and “Build built” as the theme, an exhibition on Kengo Kuma’s architecture will be held in the Diaoyutai National Guest House in Beijing on April this year. It is one of the most important events to commemorate the 36th anniversary for the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan.Kengo Kuma is a leading figure in contemporary Japanese architectural circle. His thoughts are not confined to architecture itself, but rather focus more on the relationship between architecture and human/nature. The uniqueness of his works lies on his smart usage of environmental characteristics and on how he changes architectural forms as the environment changes. Since the middle of 1990s, Kengo Kuma has engaged his architectural design in China. This is a significant change for him. He holds that China is in a surprising state of plurality and variations. Here, different and pluralistic cultures co-exist with their history and different traditions, which the plurality of Chinese natural environment is also amazing. China has a very strong desire and strength to exceed the plurality. It is almost impossible to find such desire and power in Japan.During this exhibition, audience will have the chance to watch almost all Kengo Kuma’s representative works, such as th Suntory Art Museum, Nasu-gun in Tochigi Prefecture,Lotus House、Water/Glass House in Atami, Hiroshge Museum,Kiro-san Observatory…… They are not static presentations. From these works, we can witness Kengo Kuma’s deep thinking on architecture as well as an evolution of his architectural ideas. Bamboo House Commune by the Great Wall is one of his most well-known works in China. Kengo Kuma once said, “To build up a bamboo house on a slope near the Great Wall is what I have never experienced before in Japan. How to conquer the terrain? It depends on whether I could understand the architectural principle of the Great Wall. The Great Wall was built up along a slope, and you do not have to level the land surface. The principle is very vigorous. It is especially set up for establishing large buildings in a harsh environment. We Japanese can only establish small cabins in a harsh environment; therefore we do not need such principle of being strong and powerful. The principle to build Great Wall is to fight against the cruelty of nature. But in the mean time, the principle could also be interpreted as to ‘seek victory from failure’. Confronting the natural slopes, the Great Wall has been constantly defeated by the nature from time to time. This is its way to fight against the cruel nature. In the past, I’ve always been thinking about the idea of ‘defeated architecture’. And by now I realized that the Great Wall is the best example for this idea. ”It is safe to say, Kengo Kuma’s programs in China enrich his own architectural theories and practice, and also contribute to the development of Chinese architecture. The exhibition will become a great event in the history of Sino-Japanese cultural exchange. It will help the Chinese audience better understand Japanese architecture and design. It will also play an influential role for the development of Chinese architecture.
